Topo Designs are a staple here at Yards, available both online and in-store. The American outdoor brand based in Colorado - a city with a steep history of outdoor gear and more specifically, bag manufacturing. It comes as no surprise that the brand is most notably well known for their bags and backpacks that pack functionality, design and durability.
The brand is rooted in the outdoors, with founders Jedd Rose and Mark Hansen both having spent a lot of time exploring the American-West. Ironically, in a city with such a rich outdoor history, they found themselves wishing there was a company that offered products based on simplicity, durability and good design. So, In 2008, the brand was born and Jedd began to conceptualise the brand by designing and sewing backpacks in his basement, while Mark looked for resources and partners to collaborate with and fulfil their shared vision.
Though clearly rooted in the outdoors, the brand prides themselves on their ethos, which is to make travel essentials that are accessible to everyone, whether in the city or on the trails. The duality within their ethos is also evident within their manufacturing process. They look to original outdoor equipment for inspiration on styling and functionality, while looking to new and sustainable methods of production to keep the products durable and environmentally friendly.
It is the simplicity of the products that allows travellers, hikers and city-dwellers to focus on other aspects of their journey rather than worrying about complicated equipment. For example, their Light Pack backpack is simple and functional, with a modern colour-way. It offers a spacious compartment, with a padded base that keeps everything safe - from laptops and cameras to small stoves and camping accessories. The backpack also features padded shoulder pads to keep you comfortable while it ticks all the boxes and allows you to get the most out of your travelling.
Today, Topo Designs are still in the process of designing products that Jedd and Mark would both use themselves. It has a strong brand identity which is becoming increasingly rare, and their aim is to produce well designed, durable products that are both stylish and versatile. They understand the importance of reliable gear that lasts, and it is clear to see within their products.
