Man Walking Across Alaskan Wilderness Wearing Filson Outdoor Clothing an Backpack

Filson: Fits from the Final Frontier

If you’re a fan of strong, rugged and durable clothing, look no further than the other side of the Atlantic where Filson have been making clothes for you since 1897.

C.C. Filson was born with a pioneering spirit and a love for the outdoors – he spent many years homesteading in Nebraska and travelling the country as a railroad conductor before settling in Seattle in the 1890s. Just in time for the Great Klondike gold rush that was taking place, with thousands of hunters making their way through Seattle, heading North. In 1897, C.C. Filson opened his Alaskan clothing and blanket manufacturers.

The diary of Hume Nisbet, 1897 gives an insight into the horrific conditions that faced the hunters...” Try to recall your sensations on the coldest night you have ever known: try to intensify the most bitter ice blast that has ever pierced your marrow by a thousand fold; even then you will not be able to realize spring in the  Chilkoot  Canyon, far less midwinter on the Klondike."

Filson designed his goods with these hazardous conditions in mind, while also maintaining close contact with his customers. This allowed him to meet the specific needs of the people that depended on these clothes as a means of survival. The result of this is a collaboration between designer and customer that created some of the most durable, rugged clothing ever made. Though the Gold Rush is now a part of history, the collaboration between customer and designer is one that remains an integral part of the brand's ethos.

Attracted to the rich history, many outdoorsmen flocked to Filson. The brand soon became popular among members of the timber history and the Cruiser jacket was born. The garment cemented Filson a place in history and it still holds a place within the current collection with its timeless design and functionality – handcrafted in the USA from Mackinaw wool, and featuring nine accessory pockets.

Over 120 years later, Filson remains a staple in any reputable wardrobe proving that durability, functionality and comfort never go out of style.
